One of the world’s most popular operas and unforgettable stories is set to enchant audiences when it comes to a Scottish park.
Duthie Park in Aberdeen will host a screening of La bohème on Tuesday, 26 June.
The opera is part of the free, outdoor BP Big Screens programme streamed live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.
La bohème tells the story of young poet Rodolfo. When Rodolfo meets seamstress Mimì it’s love at first sight. But faced by the cruel realities of poverty and ill health, will the flame that burns between them flicker and die? Or will the timeless strength of their youthful passion withstand every trial and tribulation that life can throw at them?
The opera is conducted by Nicola Luisotti and features Italian soprano Maria Agresta as Mimì and American tenor Matthew Polenzani as Rodolfo
The pre-screening will go live at 7pm with the curtain up at 7.30pm.
The opera will run until approximately 10.30pm with one interval during the performance where there will be exclusive backstage footage, interviews and a chance to win DVDs.
Aberdeen City Council culture spokesperson Councillor Marie Boulton said: ‘I am delighted that the BP Big Screens are returning to Aberdeen this year; it’s great to have this opportunity to enjoy opera for free right on our doorstep.
‘There is always such a wonderful atmosphere in the park, and whether you’re a big fan of opera or if this would be your first experience of it, I would highly recommend everyone bring their picnic blankets and folding chairs to the Duthie Park to enjoy this enchanting evening.’
Alex Beard, chief executive of the Royal Opera House said: ‘With the partnership between BP now in its 30th year, our BP Big Screens have become a staple of the summer diary. Over the years, this collaboration has enabled more than half a million people to experience ballet and opera – many for the first time – and BP’s ongoing commitment means that together we are able to continue bringing the best the Royal Opera House has to offer to an ever-wider audience.’
Tim Smith, BP North Sea Vice President Communications & External Affairs, said: ‘The BP Big Screens programme has been a highlight in Aberdeen’s cultural calendar for more than 10 years and never fails to draw a big crowd to Duthie Park. We hope that everyone will have a great evening’s entertainment watching one of the most well-known of all operas.’
Picnics and portable seating are welcome in the park but no glassware, knives, cans, barbecues or naked flames are allowed. A selection of hot and cold soft drinks and light snacks will be available to purchase.
The alcohol by-law on drinking in public places will be lifted between 6-11pm. However, alcohol can only be consumed on the main grass area of the Duthie Park.
