This elaborately illustrated book tells the important social, political and commercial stories of Glasgow’s past depicted through 80 historical maps of the city.
Starting with Clydesdale’s first map dating from 1596 and carrying all the way through to the 1988 map of the Glasgow Garden Festival, the book includes stories about the development of the Clyde and the shipbuilding industry, the city’s underground and transport systems, the movement of Glasgow University to Gilmorehill, regeneration and tourism.
Beautifully illustrated throughout, the maps featured are reproduced to a high quality, and provide a fascinating and unique insight into the story of Scotland’s largest city, and how it has changed and developed over a period of almost 500 years.
The writing is concise and easy to follow, with the book moving chronologically from the distant past to the present day.
Glasgow Mapping the City’s sleek design and lavish illustrations help to make this book a great addition to any coffee table.
