Review: Cooking with Mackie’s of Scotland

What’s the story?

A delicious combination of sweet and savoury recipes have been collected from staff who work for Mackie’s of Scotland, been compiled into one fantastic volume, and the proceeds will benefit muscle-wasting charity Muscular Dystrophy UK. They’ve dreamed up, tested, tasted and agreed on a collection of 31 recipes, which will whet the appetite.

Highlights

The recipes border between the traditional and the modern, and feature such recipes as fish goujons coated in salt and vinegar crisps, haggis bon bons (which are accompanied by haggis-flavoured crisps), salted caramel cheesecake topped with toffee popcorn and an ice cream cake. All of the instructions are easy to follow, and each is presented with fantastic pictures to show you what to aim for. And if you don’t quite achieve perfection, as least you’ve tried – and you’ve helped a worthy charity.

Downfalls

The only downside is that there’s only 1500 copies being produced! Proceeds from sales will go towards Muscular Dystrophy UK and their work towards developing a cure, along with providing resources and support.

Audience
If you enjoy a bit of cooking, then this is ideal. Whether you’re an accomplished Mary Berry, or just someone who enjoys pottering about in the kitchen, then you’ll find something that suits your ability. The only problem is, which do you try first?

Verdict
You can’t go wrong with a charity cookbook. There’s a personal story behind the choice of charity, as it’s dedicated to Denis Emslie, a long-term staff member and former sales director at Mackie’s of Scotland, and Mark Taylor, brother of Mackie’s crisp joint venture partner Taypack’s managing director, George Taylor, sadly lost their lives to forms of Muscular Dystrophy.
