ACCLAIMED production Bugsy Malone, based on the iconic 1976 prohibition era film, opened at The Edinburgh Playhouse last night.
After a successful run of shows at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal, audiences in the Scottish capital are now being given the chance to see the world-famous musical and its cast of young performers on stage. This is the first ever UK tour of the musical comedy, nearly 50 years after Alan Parker’s classic gangster film was released, and it will be shown in Edinburgh until Sunday 20 November.
For the uninitiated, Bugsy Malone is set in New York, a city ruled by mobsters and full of showgirls and dreamers. Rival gangster bosses Fat Sam and Dandy Dan are at loggerheads, and the latter obtains the upper hand by getting his hands on the new ‘splurge’ gun. Can Bugsy Malone, a penniless one-time boxer, step in to help defend Fat Sam?
The lead roles are being performed by three young casts of seven in rotation. It has been directed by Sean Holmes, choreographed by Olivier Award-winning Drew McOnie, and designed by multi award-winning international stage designer Jon Bausor. The musical includes such recognisable songs as My Name is Tallulah, You Give A Little Love, and Fat Sam’s Grand Slam.
Bugsy Malone will be shown at The Edinburgh Playhouse until Sunday 20 November.
