A Scottish afternoon tea to mark Mackintosh

Glasgow’s iconic Mackintosh at the Willow has announced it is offering a Scottish inspired afternoon tea in honour of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s birthday – along with the hotly anticipated opening of its newly revamped roof terrace.

The original tearooms building, located on Sauchiehall Street, will see the afternoon tea offered over two days at the historic venue in celebration of the famous artist from 8-9 June.

To mark the birthday of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Mackintosh at the Willow are offering a Scottish inspired afternoon tea for guests from £23 per person (including prosecco), which can be enjoyed in the main tearooms or Salon de Luxe.

The three-tiered afternoon tea is served on exclusive willow patterned burleigh, includes delicate finger sandwiches; egg mayo, ham and mustard, smoked Scottish salmon and cream cheese and traditional savouries; traditional fruit and plain scones served with homemade jam and clotted cream; and handmade artisan cakes and treats.

The roof terrace which is the final part of the building to open for public use, is one of two only south facing terrace in Glasgow. With exposed brick work, has views of the historical Mackintosh Building and chimney which is can be seen from a height for the first time since its opening in 1903.

Guests visiting the roof terrace over the summer months can enjoy a new bespoke drinks menu featuring tipples such as ‘perfect serve’ gin and tonic and simple spirits from £7.50, along with firm favourites: prosecco and champagne from £5.25 per glass.

A new ‘spritz cocktail’ menu will also be available featuring classic like, Aperol spritz, summer spritz and Kir Royal cocktails. Guests will also be able to enjoy bar nibbles such as bread and oil; and hummus and crudities from £3.75.

The revamp also includes a brand-new Instagram friendly spot featuring ivy foliage and floral detailing on the exposed brickwork, as well as furniture from Bo Concept – perfect for those looking to soak up some sun this summer.

Mackintosh at the Willow is a 200-cover restaurant in the A listed, internationally recognised, original Willow Tea Rooms building at 217 Sauchiehall Street. The famous tea rooms first opened in 1903 and are of huge importance to Glasgow’s architectural and cultural heritage and are the only surviving Tea Rooms designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for local entrepreneur and patron Miss Kate Cranston.

The Scottish Afternoon Tea is available from 8–9 June. Guests are unable to book in advance for the roof terrace but are welcome to pop along between 12 and 5. Private hire is also available from £175.
