Chef Nico turns back the clock with 1970s menu

The release of Mamma Mia 2 – Here We Go Again has brought back our nostalgic love of the 1970s.

So now it’s time to revive the retro delights of prawn cocktail, showboat dinner parties and fondue as Six by Nico restaurants aim to transport guests through the decade of disco with new dishes.

Angel Delight, instant mash, a Primula cheese swirl, Spam, greying boiled eggs or some chunks of tinned pineapple for some added sophistication perhaps; the 1970s food trends can only be described as the decade that good food forgot but they are food dishes that today are held in great affection.

Now though, it’s time to chill the Babycham because The 1970s are back on the menu with the latest new concept at Six by Nico restaurants in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Chef Nico Simeone will celebrate some of the highs and lows of the pre-Instagram, pre-clean eating era that will see Prawn cocktail, Chicken Kievs and Trifle being served up in the country’s hippest restaurant as Six by Nico cooks retro 70s food with an upmarket twist.

The new six course tasting menu includes Spam & Mash: Potato Espuma, Smoked Ham Hough, Pickled Mustard Seed; Prawn Cocktail: Tiger Prawn, Baby Gem Ketchup, Tomato, Shellfish Marie Rose; Chicken Kiev: Black Garlic Emulsion, Pea Pesto, Rainbow Radish; Salmon Tikka Marsala: Onion Bhaji, Caramelised Cauliflower, Lime Gel; Duck A L’Orange: Confit Duck, Aromatic Carrot, Orange Puree.

And it wouldn’t be the 1970s with a classic British summer dessert. Retro diners will love the sixth dish on the menu that offers a unique twist on the dessert with a Trifle of Summer Berries, Saffron, Almond Sponge and Whipped Creme Friache.

Chef Nico Simeone said: ‘People ate the most bizarre stuff in the 70s and we want to create incredible new dishes that would define the decade. It was the era of the showboat dinner party when meals didn’t just taste out of this world, they looked out of this world too.

Diners can book a table now for The 70s. Open from midday, Monday to Sunday throughout August in Edinburgh and Tuesday – Sunday on September dates and at the Glasgow location, each six-course menu will be available from noon to night.

The menu will be priced from £28 per person in Glasgow and Edinburgh with the option to enjoy an expertly selected wine and specialist drinks pairing for an additional £25 at each restaurant. As ever, there is a vegetarian alternative available for every course, as well as retro snack sides.

Nico added: ‘Our new menu concept is all about a time, a place and a fantastic reminder of the past with your favourite dish. Children of the 70s will remember eating them all the time at home and our team at Six by Nico are super excited to revive them for a new generation in our restaurants.’

The 1970s will run from Tuesday 7 August until Sunday 16 September 2018.
