Carly Booth visits Glenalmond’s new golf hub

A decade after she left Glenalmond College, professional golfer Carly Booth returned to her old school this week to meet staff and pupils and hear about the school’s exciting future plans for golf.

Carly, who won the Czech Ladies Open last year, spent time with pupils on the school’s stunning, snow-covered golf course before heading inside to view the brand new state-of-the-art golf hub.

She said she was delighted to return to the Perthshire school, which will be showcasing its new golf facility to visitors at an Open Day on 14 March.

The golf hub was developed as part of an ambitious, on-going programme of investment by Glenalmond, to ensure it continues to grow its reputation as a centre of excellence for learning and the exceptional range of activities, including golf, offered in its 300 acre campus.

A formal launch of the new golf hub is planned for later this year, tying in with a celebration of the centenary of the Glenalmond Golf Course, a nine hole, 18 tee course designed by James Braid.

Carly was a golf scholar at the school, which is this year offering an additional scholarship to celebrate the centenary of the Glenalmond golf course.

The new golf hub, which was funded by former pupils and friends of the school, hosts two full simulation bays using SKYTRAK and The Golf Club software.

The investment, which will also see the creation of a new six hole putting/chipping green, is part of a substantial commitment to underpin the school’s growing profile as a centre of excellence for golf.

The Golf School at Glenalmond, which is home to around 360 girls and boys who are day and boarding pupils, is led by PGA Level III coach Tim Mitchell, Glenalmond College’s head of golf.

Tim said: ‘We are very proud of our golf course which is a unique asset of our school and the creation of our new hub takes our golf offer to a new and exciting level. We were delighted to welcome Carly back to Glenalmond to visit the hub and hugely appreciate her taking time out of her busy schedule to inspire our pupils.’

Carly said she was delighted to be back at Glenalmond: ‘I really enjoyed my time at Glenalmond and it’s been great to be back after ten years to hear about the exciting plans for golf here and to see the enthusiasm of the pupils and teaching staff.

‘The new golf hub is amazing and something I would have really benefited from at the school stage. I am sure it will make a huge difference to the development of the school’s young golfers.’

Carly secured her tour card while she was doing her A-Levels at Glenalmond and is very appreciative of the support the school gave her to combine studying with her ambitions for a career in golf.

Her advice to the young people at Glenalmond today is: ‘work hard, really focus and make sure you enjoy what you do.’

The Golf Hub will be open for visitors to view at Glenalmond’s open day on Saturday, 14 March from 10am to 2pm. The open day will see the return of another former pupil, Jamie Douglas-Hamilton, who is set to inspire visitors with a talk on his recent rowing adventure, when he and team broked five world records rowing to Antarctica via Drake’s Passage, one of the most treacherous stretches of water on the planet.
