High School of Glasgow holds ‘sustainability social’

THE High School of Glasgow Junior School has held its first “Sustainability Social” at Gavin’s Mill in Milngavie.

Pupils from the junior four classes organised the event, with help from their teachers and teaching assistants.

The event gave pupils a chance to share the lessons they’ve learned with their families outside the classroom.

During their “Protecting the planet” topic, pupils have created posters, letters, infographics, and displays about plastic pollution, fast fashion, food miles, and air and water pollution.

They hosted their event at Gavin’s Mill, a 17th century corn mill on the banks of Allander Water in Milngavie.

Gavin’s Mill contains a Fairtrade shop, café, and event space for community projects.

Pupils picked up litter at Lennox Park in Milngavie in preparation for their event.

Maggie Pollock, deputy head teacher for teaching and learning at The High School of Glasgow Junior School, said: “Boys and girls hosted a tremendous ‘Sharing Our Learning’ event for their families.

“They spoke confidently and intelligently about the many plights our planet faces thanks to issues including plastic pollution and fast fashion.

“Pupils used a variety of activities to showcase their knowledge, including quizzes and hands on activities.

“They discussed with family members ways to reduce plastic consumption, recycle responsibly, cut down on emissions and shop sustainably.

“With our junior four classes so engaged and clued up on sustainability, the future of the planet is in good hands – they are the potential leaders of tomorrow after all.”
