Scottish Ballet is set to present a specially adapted wee version of a big ballet.
Wee Hansel & Gretel will open at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow from 1 –3 November; a family favourite aimed at 3-8-year-olds, and a perfect production for young people to discover the magic of ballet.
Join Hansel & Gretel as they embark on an adventure, hatching a plan to delve deep into the woods, before falling asleep in the surrounding forest.
Upon waking, Gretel notices a house ahead and the audiences are taken on the siblings’ journey as they follow a bewitching ballerina into an enchanting gingerbread house, with dancing treats and toys that come to life.
Originally choreographed by Scottish Ballet’s artistic director Christopher Hampson in 2013, dancers from Scottish Ballet will perform in this well-known fairytale alongside talented students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s BA in Modern Ballet.
With set and costume designed by Gary Harris, Wee Hansel & Gretel will be set to the music of Engelbert Humperdinck, recorded live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, making it a colourful interpretation of the Grimm Brothers’ famous fairytale.
Christopher Hampson, CEO/artistic director, said: ‘This ballet is close to my heart, so I am delighted to share this special hour-long show with young children in Glasgow. It is full of dancing and storytelling, plucky characters and a happy ending – perfect for experiencing the magic of live performance.’
A production fit for the whole family, Wee Hansel & Gretel will be adapted by keeping the auditorium lighting on and modifying the content of the production for a welcoming and relaxed 50 minute production for wee ones, running at Theatre Royal, Glasgow at 11am and 1.30pm from 1-3 November.
