In early 2017 John and Carole Reed were considering a new project.
They had recently purchased a home on the Isle of Arran, which boasted stunning views of the Holy Isle and Firth of Clyde, just steps away from the beach.
Keen to share these treasures with family and friends, John and Carole were looking to renovate the existing garden ‘back house’ to provide comfortable, year-round accommodation.
Back houses are typical of Arran architecture, originally built to accommodate the owners of the main house during summer letting.
As a busy, working couple, they needed a hassle-free solution. This drew them to The Wee House Company.
They said: ‘We were attracted by the package on offer with The Wee House Company dealing with the planning, building warrant and demolition, as well as providing the groundworks and foundations for our new wee house.’
John and Carole decided it would be best to replace the back house, having The Wee House Company build a sustainable home with enhanced insulation and state-of-the-art heating system.
Crucially, the new design would maintain the traditional, cottage-like appearance of the original back house.
Building on the islands can have its challenges, with frequent ferry cancellations in winter.
However, The Wee House Company’s off-site, modular construction methods meant that only three weeks of work took place on site. This had additional benefits for John and Carole, who were anxious to maintain their home’s well-appointed garden.
They continued: ‘Everything went to plan, despite the weather and a tricky sloping site. On completion the external landscaping has returned our garden to its original condition or even better.’
From first contact with The Wee House Company to hand over of the keys took just six months – including gaining necessary consents.
The couple added: ‘There is a definite “can do” approach from everyone involved and we would be happy to recommend The Wee House Company to anyone else looking for a similar project.’
