Magical mystery days out await across Scotland

Historic days out await across the country this year.

Historic Environment Scotland, which manages over 300 Historic Scotland properties across the country, has launched its 2019 events programme, brimming with exciting activity for all ages and interests.

The Spectacular Jousting tournament returns to Linlithgow Palace and Caerlaverock Castle. Meanwhile, little ones can go unicorn spotting at Stirling Castle, while bigger kids will love to try their hand at ‘parkaeology’ in Holyrood Park, or witness The Rock of Ages at Dumbarton Castle. The action-packed programme includes events for the whole family.

The 2019 itinerary provides a fun-filled opportunity to experience Scotland’s past and explore its culture, while making new memories and learning about the history of hundreds of unique heritage sites throughout Scotland.

Marking the 250th anniversary of Fort George, Festival at the Fort invites visitors to discover why and how the mighty fort was created. There will also be opportunities to explore the gripping stories the fort has collected over the ages, and to learn about and take part in Highland culture, through magical music and energetic dancing.

On Monday, more than 50 attractions throughout Scotland reopened their doors for the summer season, many with exciting events in
store. From Shetland’s stunning Mousa Broch, which is steeped in history and features in two Norse sagas, to the remarkably eccentric Scotstarvit Tower, a quirky building with many key features missing, there is plenty to see and do across the country.

Stephen Duncan, director of commercial and tourism at HES, said: ‘The start of the season is always an exciting time for us, as we get ready to welcome new and returning visitors to our sites across the country. At HES we are passionate about being able to provide experiences that allow locals and visitors alike to explore Scotland’s rich heritage.

‘Embracing the vast history of the country, we’re able to bring the stories of our past to life in new and innovative ways through our programme of events. Our 2019 schedule offers a great way to discover Scotland’s history, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone to our sites.’

One of this year’s highlights will be the magical Unicorn Party held at Stirling Castle on 6 and 7 April. Discover more about this mythical beast and how it became Scotland’s national animal. The whole family can join in the quiz to spot these beautiful creatures on display around the castle, and there may even be a real unicorn in attendance.

Families looking for something different this Easter weekend are invited to take part in the Easter Eggsplorer Trails. Hosted at 19 Historic Scotland venues, visitors will be given clues to complete challenges, while exploring iconic castles, abbeys, forts and palaces.

Tickets for the events can be bought in advance online or purchased on the day of the event. Visitors who purchase their tickets online will be able to save 10 percent and many events are free for Historic Scotland members.
