This new exhibition will appeal to your sweet tooth

Scots are well-known for their sweet tooth, loving soft drinks and confectionery.

And now sweetie enthusiasts can explore the story of the Lanarkshire confectionery industry at Sweetie!, a new exhibition.

This display explores the story of the Lanarkshire confectionery industry, from snowballs and soor plooms to tablet, is running until 19 August at the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life.

Sweetie making was one of the earliest manufacturing industries in Lanarkshire. King’s of Wishaw was the first, starting out as fruit farmers and expanding into confectionery when technology became available with the advent of the industrial revolution.

This exhibition takes a nostalgic look at old favourites, as well as the history of sugar, the slave trade and current issues today around obesity and tooth decay.

The exhibition features local manufacturers including Lees of Scotland, Christies, Kings of Wishaw and Kidds of Airdrie.

There is also manufacturing equipment from Kings of Wishaw on display such as comfit pan, mixer, apron and packaging. There are also some fun things for children including a ‘gingerbread’ house and a sweetie trail.

Entry to Sweetie!, at the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, Coatbridge, is free.
