NE250 Hotel Review: Meldrum House
The hotel: Located in Oldmeldrum, you will need to take a short detour from the NE250 route to get here but it is well worth it. It is close to many of the area’s castles so would make a good base for keen to explore them.
As well as being a country hotel, it also has one of the most beautiful parkland golf courses in the UK. The main hotel compromises of the original baronial style building with a new modern wing built onto it. It also has a separate ‘stable block’ where we stayed which houses 13 double rooms.
The room: Our room definitely had a luxurious edge and we felt very well catered for. We brought our dog along with us and he was also well looked after with bowls and bedding left in the room for him. Everything that us humans could have wanted was also catered for!
The highlight of the room was definitely the bathroom which was modern with a huge bath and shower. The underfloor heating was particularly appreciated on a chilly February day after a day of walking.
The food and drink: We ate in the dining room and had a wonderful three course dinner. Portsoy salmon and butternut squash velouté to start and followed by a delicious twice baked Lochnager soufflé and steak for mains and finishing off with a chocolate delice and rhubarb panna cotta accompanied by wines from their impressive wine list.
After our dinner we went to the drawing rooms to finish off our drinks which, with a roaring fire and cosy sofas, was a wonderful way to finish our evening. Don’t forget to have a drink in the hotel’s Cave Bar and perhaps even treat yourself to a whisky from one of their old and rare whisky collection.
The verdict: A great country hotel – our only regret was not staying longer!
