The big-hearted staff of Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel have raised an incredible £6000 to help homeless people and sick children in Scotland.
Their goal is to hit an aspirational target by April 2021 as part of a two-year partnership with Social Bite and Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.
As well as raising money, 11 staff volunteered to run a soup kitchen for Glasgow’s homeless out of its Deli restaurant, with the next one scheduled for near the end of the month.
The Grand Central team also raised £4,500 in a trek up Ben Nevis and by racing in Pedal for Scotland. The staff aim to raise further a £1100 by joining Social Bite’s Sleep in the Park event on 7 December.
Guests of the hotel have also been doing their part by donating £1 to partnership charities once they check out – a first for Scotland.
Paul Bray, general manager of the Grand Central Hotel, said: ‘We pride ourselves in our efforts to help our community and the city of Glasgow as a whole. It’s part of our culture of working here at this iconic hotel and we know our guests appreciate being able to get involved and help in any way they can to give back to those less fortunate.’
Guests have also helped to raise £1,500 from £1 donated each time they pick a special dessert and cocktail. The dessert, a Black Forrest cheesecake, is available from the hotel’s Tempus restaurant and features brandy-soaked cherries. The cocktail, available from the Champagne Central bar, is the Dragon Sour made with Disaronno amaretto, ginger syrup, wasabi, lemon and egg white.
The hotel has also been running a successful soup kitchen out of its Deli restaurant with 11 staff volunteering 88 hours of their time for the two soup kitchen sessions which took place in September and October respectively.
Following its success, the next soup kitchen will take place on Wednesday 27 November between 7.30-9pm. Those in need will have access to food, juice, tea/coffee, plenty of warm clothing and toiletries to take away.
The Deli entrance can be found on Hope Street side of the Grand Central Hotel building just around the corner from the station entrance.
