Aldi triumphs at the 2020 Icons of Whisky awards

Aldi was named winner of the Supermarket of the Year and Own Brand Supermarket of the Year at the 2020 Icons of Whisky Scotland Awards.

Presented each year in Edinburgh, the Icons of Whisky are the annual industry awards organised by Whisky Magazine, which recognise the very best people, places and bars across the Scottish whisky industry.

Aldi fought off stiff competition to pick up the award which commends supermarkets for the craftsmanship, skill and knowledge involved in bringing iconic spirits to market.

Aldi’s own-label Scotch whisky brands include the Highland Black and Highland Earl blended whisky and the Glen Marnoch 12-Year-Old Highland single malt.

Graham Nicolson, group buying director, Aldi Scotland said: ‘It’s fantastic to have won both Supermarket of the Year and Own Brand Supermarket of the Year at such a prestigious event. The Icons of Whisky Scotland Awards celebrate the very best of Scotch whisky, and to be acknowledged by the industry, along with many great brands is particularly special.

‘Showcasing some of Scotland’s best whiskies in our 91 stores is a privilege and we are determined to continue to offer a diverse range to our customers. Aldi’s spirits range continues to go from strength to strength, offering high quality blends, blended malts and single malts at exceptional value for money.

‘This award is testament to our dedicated Buying team, who strive to represent our local produce in the best way possible.’

Rob Allanson, editor of Whisky Magazine, commented: ‘It’s our honour to give Aldi the recognition and credit they deserve due to their significant investment and dedication in supporting the Scottish whisky industry.

‘We are very lucky to have a leading supermarket brand heavily involved in Scotch whisky, from everyone at Whisky Magazine we raise our glass to Aldi for their continued efforts in celebrating and promoting our industry.’

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Aldi opening its first store in Scotland and the 10th anniversary of the creation of its dedicated Scottish Buying Department.

The supermarket was recently crowned Scottish Sourcing Business of the Year at the Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards, recognised for its strong relationships with over 90 local suppliers and commitment to increasing its range of Scottish products from 400 to over 450 by the end of 2020.
