Oro Gin joins covid-19 fight with hand sanitiser

The team behind gold award-winning, Oro Gin, have been using their skills and distillery at Dalton in Dumfriesshire, in a new way to help the local community fight the Covid-19 outbreak.

Chemical biologist and master distiller at Oro, Ray Clynick Jnr has been working round the clock with his team of chemists to produce hand sanitiser bottles for those in need including pharmacy workers, NHS workers including blood bikers, care workers, Scottish Prison Service and the MOD, Air Ambulance, Vets, Royal Mail, transport and retail workers, using a recipe which is approved by The World Health Organisation (WHO).

The 50ml bottles which are available for £1.50 and can be collected from the distillery and as well as refilled for £1, are being measured out with volumetric dispensers daily by the team who met on the Masters Course in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

With demand from organisations including Scottish Water, NHS and MOD increasing, Ray’s father Raymond Clynick Snr has been in regular contact with suppliers to buy more of the white grain spirit, which is the key component of both their gin and hand sanitiser.

Ray Jnr said: ‘Given the serious nature of the situation, we knew we needed both the resource and infrastructure in place to really help make a difference, not just in the short term but in the longer term.

‘We spent a decent amount of time making sure we had the right equipment in place and that the supply chain was right, whilst sourcing reagents, luckily most of which we did already have.

‘Our team have been absolutely amazing and the whole operation really wouldn’t be possible without their hard work, helping others has been the real driver for them and to see that we are helping the local community as well as larger organisations further afield is definitely what’s keeping everyone going.

‘We are fully committed to making sanitiser for as long as it’s needed, we are able to take more custom orders for bigger organisations as well as selling individual bottles which people can collect from the distillery or packs of eight can be bought online.’

The team is also offering Oro Care Packages online for £35 which includes a bottle of Oro Gin, four tonics, garnish and the Oro hand sanitiser and a pack of eight sanitisers for £12.

Ray continued: ‘In these unprecedented times we all need to do what we can to stay well. Unwinding at the end of the day with an Oro and tonic is a perfect way to catch up with the family, discuss the news, check-in on how we are all feeling and make sense of what is going on.

‘The Care Package is a perfect gift and with the inclusion of the sanitiser it makes it all the more welcome.’

The distillery has changed its opening hours to 10am to 6pm daily and are in discussion with local volunteers to set up a delivery service.
