A Scots-born international hotelier is coming home to gradually launch a new hotel collection and the clue is in the name.
Gordon Campbell Gray’s new company, The Wee Hotel Company, plans to develop and invest in special properties around Scotland and will be quietly looking for suitable opportunities.
The emphasis will be on authenticity and emphasising the magic of Scottish food and ingredients, hospitality and a warm welcome.
The Pierhouse Hotel and Seafood Restaurant at Port Appin in Argyll were The Wee Hotel Company’s first purchase. They added to this with the Three Chimneys on Skye last week.
The Pierhouse is tucked away on the shores of Loch Linnhe with simply breathtaking views to the islands of Lismore and Mull. The small hotel and renowned Scottish Seafood Restaurant is one of Argyll’s most idyllic and romantic destinations.
Port Appin has just been named as one of the best places in the UK to live, and Gordon couldn’t agree more.
Over the course of this year there will be additional investment in facilities whilst maintaining and enhancing the Pierhouse’s reputation for outstanding Scottish seafood and genuine hospitality. The changes will be gentle and merely enhance what is already a wonderful place.
Gordon said: ‘I’ve been lucky enough to live and work in many countries across the world but I really feel that few can rival the sheer magnificence of Scotland when it comes to scenery, food and drink, and I’m now ready to come home.
‘I live in Argyll and realised one day that I always had that going back to school feeling when I was leaving to head off on more travels, so I finally said to myself – then why am I leaving?’
Gordon is a renowned hotelier and the founder of Campbell Gray Hotels. He has been personally involved in every aspect of the creation, design and philosophy of each hotel.
At this stage, Gordon has decided to hold a more ambassadorial role to allow him more time at home in Scotland to live and work, supporting the development of The Wee Hotel Company.
As the word ‘luxury’ becomes increasingly overused and so often synonymous with excess, the philosophy of The Wee Hotel Company is based very much around a greater sense of integrity and looking after guests seeking an authentic hospitality experience.
During his twenties, Gordon spent several years running Save The Children projects in Bangladesh, Morocco and Nicaragua. He is Vice President of Save The Children and an ardent fundraiser for this and many other charities.
Gordon is passionate about the environment, encouraging other hoteliers to do more to reduce waste and take better care of the planet.
He was named Hotelier of the Year by Hotel & Caterer in 2002, received the Leading Legend award by Leading Hotels of the World at their annual convention in Tokyo in 2010 and also received the Outstanding Contribution to the Hotel Industry award at the Hotel Cateys in London the following year.
Gordon continued: ‘For several years I’ve wanted to come home to Scotland. The Wee Hotel Company is the result of this ambition and the start of an exciting new chapter in my life.’
With an emphasis on integrity rather than excess, The Wee Hotel Company will give guests a genuine introduction to Scottish hospitality in stylish, contemporary surroundings. Food and drink will be an integral part of the philosophy and experience with menus showcasing local produce and giving a real sense of place.
